Description
Patty melts are a mouthwatering fusion of classic cheeseburgers and grilled cheese sandwiches. Picture juicy beef patties topped with gooey melted cheese and sweet, caramelized onions, all nestled between crispy slices of buttery rye or sourdough bread.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
- 4 slices Swiss or cheddar cheese
- 1 medium onion (thinly sliced)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Shape ground beef into four burger-sized patties; season both sides with salt and pepper.
- In a skillet, melt one tablespoon butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown (about 10 minutes). Remove from skillet.
- Cook the patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat for about four minutes on each side until browned. Top each patty with a slice of cheese during the last minute to melt.
- Assemble each sandwich by spreading butter on one side of two slices of bread. On the unbuttered side, place a patty followed by caramelized onions. Top with another slice of bread (buttered side up).
- Grill sandwiches in the skillet until golden brown on both sides (about three minutes per side). Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use high-quality beef for juicier patties; avoid overcooking.
- Experiment with different types of cheese for varied flavors.
- Add toppings like sautéed mushrooms or jalapeños for extra zing.
